Racetree, a young stud based on the former spectacular winner producing Noble Park at Innisplain near Beaudesert, is a short priced favourite to quickly emerge as major force rivaling its near neighbour, Glenlogan Park, when its first sires have representation.
The stud’s first contribution by these sires begins in 2009 -10 with the appearance at two of some of the first Australian bred progeny of Greenwood Lake (USA) (Meadowlake – Au Printemps, by Dancing Champ), a12-years younger three-quarter brother to the former noted Noble Park sire Success Express (USA) (by Meadowlake’s sire Hold Your Peace and also from Au Printemps).
They are two of the best American juveniles to reside in Australia with Greenwood Lake, a winner at that age of three of five starts, including the Belmont Champagne Stakes-Gr.1 and the Aqueduct Remsen Stakes-Gr.2, second in the Belmont Futurity Stakes-Gr.1 and fourth in the Gulfstream Park Fountain of Youth Stakes-Gr.1, challenging as the best of the two. He was ranked America’s second best juvenile of 1999.
Success Express, on the other hand, in1987 won four races at two, including the American Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-Gr.1 and two Listed stakes, finished third in the Saratoga Hopeful Stakes-Gr.1 and fourth in the Santa Anita Norfolk Stakes-Gr.1.
He has made a big contribution to the success as breeders and racehorse owners of Peter and Wendy Moran, the owners of the former Noble Park stud, the one which is now Racetree, from a small broodmare band.Three Success Express progeny they bred and raced were Mossman (won the QTC Castlemaine Stakes-Gr.1, MVRC AAMI Vase-Gr.2, second AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.1, VRC Australian Guineas-Gr.1, third STC George Ryder Stakes-Gr.1 and AJC Champagne Stakes-Gr.1), Staging (10 wins, AJC Light Fingers Stakes-Gr.2, Surround Stakes-Gr.2, Emancipation Stakes-Gr.2, BTC Carlton Cup-Gr.2; second QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.1, BTC Doomben 10000-Gr.1, third QTC Stradbroke-Gr.1, AJC Chipping Norton Stakes-Gr.1) and Glimmers (two Sydney wins).
Using Glimmers, the Morans bred on Noble Park one of the great sprinting fillies of recent years, the Lion Hunter product Gold Edition. Blessed with an iron constitution, she won 17 races (14 stakes) and earned $3,182,195.
Before selling Noble Park to the Kevin Dixon headed Racetree company, the Morans briefly stood Mossman, a sire now at Vinery in the Hunter Valley, and showed again what great country it is to rear horses on by breeding his sibling daughters Segments (won the MRC Schillaci Stakes-Gr.2, AJC Gimcrack Stakes-LR; second VRC Oakleigh Plate-Gr.1) and Pure Energy (won STC Reisling Slipper Trial-Gr.2 and second in the Golden Slipper-Gr.1).
Racetree have very good potential to also produce good horses on the property, starting with the offspring of Success Express’s three-quarter brother Greenwood Lake. Already sire of 73 winners (70.2% of his runners) from use earlier in America, he has over 40 Australian first crop potential runners, including progeny of mares by Zabeel, Royal Academy (USA), Semipalatinsk (USA), Danehill (USA), Sir Tristram (IRE), Prego (IRE), Rubiton, Brief Truce (USA), Lion Hunter, Catbird, Clang, Rory’s Jester, Fuji Kiseki (JPN) and Spectrum (IRE).
Because of Greenwood Lake’s relationship to Success Express, daughters of Danehill and his sons Lion Hunter and Catbird put to him result in pedigrees very similar to that which produced Gold Edition, albeit conversely.
It speaks volumes for the management at Racetree and the stallion’s fertility that Greenwood Lake achieved an amazing 98.0% from his first season at the stud and 94.2% (72 mares) from his second.
He is one of two proven sires that have been astutely acquired for Racetree and which are each available for the 2009 season on the appealing fee of $8,800.
The other is the spectacularly bred Monashee Mountain (USA), a son of Danzig and from the Mr. Prospector dual Group1 winner Prospectors Delight, a mare who has had the admirable record of having all her five foals win stakes races. Monashee Mountain’s contribution was four stakes wins, including his two at two, from seven outings, all in Ireland.
Racetree appeared to pick up a real plum when they were able to acquire Monashee Mountain from his overseas owners as a resident sire last year, one in which he served 91 mares. He had previously shuttled six times, 2001-06, to the Willowbend stud at nearby Beaudesert and to date has 133 winners to his credit from this use.
His scoreboard is headed by La Montagna (dam by Hatta’s Mill (GB); seven wins, $1,081,650, QTC Stradbroke Handicap-Gr.1, BTC Classic-Gr.3, Bright Shadow Quality-LR; second STC Missile Stakes-Gr.3), Mount Verde (Rory’s Jester; six wins, four in Sydney including the STC Maurice McCarten Stakes-LR), Cherry Creek (Lake Coniston (IRE); eight wins New Zealand, Canterbury Belle Stakes-LR), Champara (Clear Choice (USA): won Hobart, Launceston; third Tasmanian Guineas-LR), Monashee Princess (Brave Warrior; two at Sunshine Coast; second QTC Peter Gallagher Stakes-LR), Sir Monashee (Paris House (GB); five Brisbane wins, also Gold Coast Magic Millions Sprint; fourth QTC Lightning Handicap-LR), Ascendant (Alannon; three Brisbane wins at two) and Sweet As (River of Light (USA); five Brisbane wins; Listed fourth twice at two).
Monashee Mountain has had at least 35 of his Australian progeny successful on metropolitan tracks - Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart, Hong Kong and Macau,.
In addition, he has had over 100 winners, including seven successful in stakes races, from use in both Ireland and America. They have won in 10 countries, including Ireland, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, the United States and Canada..
Monashee Mountain’s success as a sire, particularly in Australia, resulted in strong support in his first season at Racetree last year. Among the 91 mares served were daughters of Danehill (USA), Encosta de Lago, Last Tycoon (Ire), Snippets, Dehere (USA), Thunder Gulch (USA), Clang, Show a Heart, Spectrum (IRE), Stravinsky (USA), Grand Lodge (USA), O’Reilly, Vain, Lion Hunter, Success Express (USA), Nassipour (USA), Marscay, Centaine, Falvelo, Sequalo, Night Shift (USA), Brave Warrior, Celestial Dancer (IRE), Sir Tristram (IRE), Don’t Say Halo (USA), Zeditave, Scenic (IRE) and Spinning World (USA). At least a dozen of the mares are likely to have August foals.
Monashee Mountain and Greenwood Lake are the only two of the four sires available at Racetree to have foals of racing age. Both winning Australians retired to stud in 2007, the others are Hotel Grand (Grand Lodge (USA) – Terrestial, by Star Watch) fee $13,200 and Top Marc (Geiger Counter (USA) – Prime Page, by Best Western) $3,300.
A big, powerfully made winner of the AJC Spring Champion Stakes, STC Canterbury Guineas and Newcastle Spring Stakes in a nine start career, Hotel Grand had one of the best quality books put to a Queensland sire in his first season,
He looked after 57 mares, including 40 winners, and missed on only four of them, adding up to a 91.1% fertility.
They included daughters of Danehill, Royal Academy, Anabaa, Dehere,Thunder Gulch, Zabeel, Danzero, Flying Spur, Snippets, Rory’s Jester, Encosta de Lago, Strategic, Marauding, Quest for Fame, Success Express, Octagonal, Lion Hunter, Galileo, At Talaq, Canny Lad, Zeditave, End Sweep, Gilded Time, Beautiful Crown, Favorite Trick, Danewin and Langfuhr.
Bred on similar lines to Shogun Lodge, a product of a mare by another Bletchingly sire, Hotel Grand is nearly a three-quarter brother to the Clear Mountain Fairview Stud, Greenmount, Qld based Outback Prince, a winner of the QTC T.J. Smith Stakes and Hobartville Stakes and an AJC Spring Champion Stakes second. They are both from Terrestial, a grandaughter of Zabriskie Point, a mare bred on a cross of great American racehorses, Sword Dancer and Swaps.
A grey like his sire, a representative of the Mr. Prospector male line, Top Marc was a tough durable Queenslander who won12 races from the 1050m of a Doomben Dash up to an Eagle Farm 1800m event.
All told Top Marc won six races in Brisbane and included in other wins the Sunshine Coast Glasshouse Handicap-LR and Beaudesert Cup. He finished second in the Gold Coast Goldmarket and BTC Doomben Stakes-LR and fourth in the Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes-LR.

No stopping Monashee Mountain
Racetree resident sire Monashee Mountain has been in superb form in recent times with his progeny winning over 50 races in the past two months.
Monashee Mountain tasted success in the U.S.A on the weekend with his 3 year old filly Dance For Us (Bred in Canada) saluting in a $250k event at Woodbine over 1700m.
Monashee Mountain has sired winners in 25 different countries from 800m to 3000m on all surfaces.
"He really is hard to keep up with" said Racetree Managing Director Kevin Dixon.
"Winners everywhere from 2 years to 7 years, His record is excellent and again Qld and NSW breeders have thrown there support behind him (Monashee Mountain). He added.
"Monashee Mountain will serve a full book again in 2009 such is his popularity" Mr Dixon concluded.
Monashee Mountain stands at $8,800 inc gst (payment on live foal)
Monashee a world wide success
Monashee Mountain Adds 45 Winners In 2 Months
The progeny of Queensland's Racetree-based former shuttle stallion Monashee Mountain (Danzig-Prospectors Delite, by Mr Prospector) "are on a roll & the stallion's owner Kevin Dixon just about needs an atlas to see where they are winning" declared The Courier-Mail. Last month Monashee Mountain had 24 winners in 5 countries (Australia, US, Canada, Italy & Great Britain) & so far this month he has added 21 winners in Australia, US, Italy & Great Britain.
US-bred 12-year-old Monashee Mountain (who entered stud in 2001) stood initially in Ireland & then in Kentucky & California when owned by Coolmore, while shuttling to Australia to stand at Beaudesert-based Willowbend Stud. Last year Dixon purchased him for his Innisplain-based Racetree stud (also in the Beaudesert district) & Monashee Mountain's extensive travelling "has meant he has had runners on both sides of the Atlantic & Pacific, while from his time in Ireland his progeny have worked their way into Europe" with Dixon noting recent reports that "he had runners in Turkey & the Czech Republic". Among his latest successes was his 9th black-type winner Slater's Peanuts at Prairie Meadows in Iowa in the US. Monashee Mountain is the sire of 2006 G1 Stradbroke victor La Montagna and will stand the 2009 Australian breeding season at Racetree for $8,800. (Payment on live foal)
A grand future for Queensland’s Racetree stud
APPRAISAL of the mares that went to him in his first season suggests that the Danzig male line 2005-06 Sydney classic star Hotel Grand has real good opportunity to play a significant role in the provision of a grand future for Queensland’s young upmarket Innisplain valley breeding farm Racetree.
This big, powerfully made winner of the AJC Spring Champion Stakes, STC Canterbury Guineas and Newcastle Spring Stakes in a nine start career got by the Chief’s Crown shuttled champion juvenile and miler Grand Lodge from Terrestial, a Sydney winner by the Bletchingly Golden Slipper winner and champion Australasian 2YO Star Watch, had one of the best quality books put to a Queensland sire in his first season, 2007.
It was a year which he looked after 57 mares, including 40 winners, and missed on only four of them, adding up to a 91.1% fertility. They included daughters of Danehill, Royal Academy, Anabaa, Dehere, Thunder Gulch, Zabeel, Danzero, Flying Spur, Snippets, Rory’s Jester, Encosta de Lago, Strategic, Marauding, Quest for Fame, Success Express, Octagonal, Lion Hunter, Galileo, At Talaq, Canny Lad, Zeditave, End Sweep, Gilded Time, Beautiful Crown, Favorite Trick, Danewin and Langfuhr.
Among significant matings were three daughters of the American Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and first class Australasian sire Success Express, one who got some of his best progeny when he stood on the property that is Racetree when it was owned by Peter and Wendy Moran and traded as Noble Park. One of the three sires standing alongside Hotel Grand is Greenwood Lake, a12-years younger three-quarter brother to Success Express. Both of them challenged as the best juveniles in their generation in America.
Two Danehill mares with first crop foals are Miss Eurodollar (from an Ireland sired Caerleon mare out of a half-sister to good Australian sire Scenic) and Pocketfull of Dreams (from a daughter of Sadler’s Wells), while two by Encosta de Lago are Dama De Lago (from winner of nine races and stakes placed) and Swapping (a Melbourne 2-year-old winner from a sister by Century to high class performer and producer Stage Hit).
An interesting mare with a Hotel Grand filly is Lady Tiara, a product of a mating of Beautiful Crown with Lae Lady Lae, a half-sister to Caulfield Cup second Laebeel. The Patinack Farm stud, Hunter Valley located Beautiful Crown like Hotel Grand’s sire Grand Lodge is by Chief’s Crown, a horse many would consider Danzig’s best racing son.
A champion European galloper at two and three, Grand Lodge has had outstanding performers in both hemispheres, headed by Sinndar (in Europe an unbeaten Group1 winner at two and a world leader at three, winning the English and Irish Derbys and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe; sire of Group1 winners), Grandera (an international star, sire winners Australia, Japan) and the Australians Shogun Lodge (13 stakes wins, including four Group1s, and $4,652,224) and Freemason (seven wins,16 Group1 cheques, $3,492,540).
Hotel Grand stands this season at $13,200 inc gst

A Mountain of success
When Racetree Managing Director Kevin Dixon announced in early 2008 that they had acquired the former Danzig shuttled Monashee Mountain as a resident sire for their quality young Racetree Stud near Glenlogan Park in the Innisplain valley near Brisbane and the Gold Coast, his stock in Australia have been adding more respect to his prowess.
Monashee Mountains new kid on the block is the 4 year old Mount Verde a recent black type winner and stakes of over $200k. He is the first metropolitan winner among the four from Oro Verde, an unraced half-sister by Golden Slipper winner Rory's Jester to Antolomeo, a Randwick 2-year-old winner who has produced seven winners including the Beautiful Crown Group 3 winning filly Crown Princess.
After winning a welter at Randwick in class record time as a 3 year old last season Mount Verde recently won the STC Schweppervescence (L) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day.
Connections obviously taken with Mount Verde's form have booked his dam Oro Verde into Monashee Mountain for 2009 for a repeat mating.
"Mount Verde (see record below) is very promising and we are excited with the owners decision to bring her (Oro Verde) back to Monashee Mountain" said Mr Dixon.
"Monashee (Mountain) is so adaptable. he sires winners from 800m to 3000m , from 2 year olds to 6 and 7 and they seem to handle all surfaces including the recently installed Cushion track at the Sunshine Coast" "plus he sired winners in over 25 different countries" he added.
"Last year plenty of previous breeders to Monashee Mountain came back to utilise his services again which illustrates they are happy with the foals he produces" he concluded.
MOUNT VERDE (04g, Rory's Jester, Stop the Music). 6 wins-1 at 2-to 1200m to 2008-09, A$207,700, STC Schweppervescence H., L, AJC Dover Heights H., STC Agricola H., Quakers Inn H., Hawkesbury RC Rating 76 Handicap, 2yo H., 2d STC Lucky's Freeway Hotel H., Bavarian Bier Cafe H., Veolia Environmental Services H, 3d STC Love Vintage H., 4th STC Star Kingdom S., Gr.3.
Monashee Mountain is also the sire of La Montagna, who trounced older sprinters in taking the 2006 edition of the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm
Monashe Mountain will stand 2009 at $8800 inc gst and the very popular "payment on live foal" will continue.
2009 RACETREE STALLION FEES ANNOUNCED
Racetree, one of Queensland’s leading thoroughbred Nurseries at Innisplain, just south of Beaudesert has announced their 2009 Stallion Roster and fees for the upcoming breeding season.
Racetree Managing Director Kevin Dixon understands the current economic crisis facing the racing industry and announced the Stallion fee reductions in line with the downturn through the sales ring.
“At Racetree we believe you must stay in touch with the current market trends and hence our reduced Stallion fees for 2009” said Mr Dixon the recently elected newly formed Brisbane Race Club foundation Chairman.
“There is no doubt the market is down in the sales ring and racing people must adapt to this downturn” he added.
“Early 2009 was good to us with the first crop of the Australian bred Greenwood Lakes realising good results at the Yearling sales at the Gold Coast with two youngsters fetching over $100k.
The youngsters by Hotel Grand are excellent types and will be keenly sought after at the sales in early 2010.
Plus, Monashee Mountain continues to produce winners and Top Marc has some nice foals on the ground and they appear to have inherited his toughness.
Again payment on live foal is still a winner for us, it gives clients that bit of room to move financially.
Most studs will most likely follow a reduction of service fees trend and we are pleased to be one of the first Studs in Queensland to announce our Stallion fees and look forward to the 2009 breeding season.” Mr Dixon concluded.
